"Back" and "Forward" Icons RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using Word 16.34 as part of the Office 365 suite running on Mac OS Catalina.  I don't see the "back" and "forward" icons to add to the Quick Access Toolbar that I was able to use in previous versions of Word.  Are these icons no longer available?  These are commands that I find useful, especially when constructing larger documents.

    Thank you,

    Jimmy

  • If you're referring to the WebGoBack commands that work with hyperlinks in your document, please use Option + Left Arrow key to go back and Option + Right Arrow to move forward.

If you're trying to move between the 2 most recent edit points, use Shift + F5.

If that doesn't answer your question, please provide more detail about what you're trying to do and how you remember those QAT icons behaving.

  • Thank you for responding.  The icons were a left arrow and a right arrow.  Use of the arrows to go back or forward were very useful when navigating back and forth with cross references in the document.  For example, I could be reading through a paragraph in the early part of the document and then click on a cross reference that leads me to an appendix.  I could read what I needed in the appendix, then click the back arrow and return to the paragraph I was reading.

  • Did you try the Shift + F5 keyboard shortcut I posted?

  • Hi Jimmy,

According to my tests, the mac version of word doesn't have these two icons.

I recommend that you refer to the workaround provided by jkorchok, or reuse the previous version.

  • Yes I did, it doesn't do anything.  Possibly the closest thing is fn+F5 where a dialog box will pop up and allow you to enter a page number.  Clunky and not what I was looking for.....I do appreciate your suggestions and help.

  • Hi Jimmy,

In this case, I recommend that you use the previous version.

The two icons could not be found in the new version.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards

  •  At first, please upgrade your word to the newest version.

If the issue persists, please try using the following workarounds:

    (1)   For the person who currently has the commands available in their Quick access toolbar:

    1. Go to Customize Quick Access Toolbar.
    2. Go to Import/Export at the bottom right.
    3. Click on ‘Export all Customization’.  Name the file and save it.
    4. Send the file to the person who needs the commands.

    (2)   For the person who needs the commands:

    1. Go to Customize Quick Access Toolbar, same location and select ‘Import Customization File’.
    2. Select the file and import it.
    3. Click ‘Yes’ to replace your current Quick Access Setup.

I hope it will work for you.
