nm or dumpbin equivalent RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking for a Windows equivalent of Linux/UNIX nm tool to list symbols from an executable. It's said that the dumpbin utility in Visual Studio can do the job. Is there such a tool that is not part of Visual Studio?

  • sysinternals has strings.exe utility to do this. You can also use findstr.exe, which is part of Windows.

  • Searching for embedded strings (strings.exe & findstr.exe) is not the same thing as displaying symbols.  For example, if this code is in a .obj or .exe

    char* mySignature() { return "I'm a rookie"; }

    strings returns "I'm a rookie"

    The symbol is mySignature, with or without it's C++ adornment.
