Windows 2008 R2 64 bit - Losing connection to the network RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I have a 2008 R2 64-bit Dell Poweredge 2950 server that is loosing it's connection to the network every 30+ days.

My original troubeshooting involved swapping out the Network cables, switching switch ports, etc but the only way I got the server back on the network was to disable

    the NIC and enable it.

This has happened 3 times since installing the server about 3 months ago.

There are no event logs(unless I'm looking in the wrong location in 2008)

This is my main DB server, so I need to find a solution to this problem soon!!!

  • What do you mean by ‘losing connection to the network’? losing IP address?   Do you the correct NIC drivers installed?  Do you have more than 1 NIC on this server?

Please paste the IPCONFIG/ALL result here.

Server has 2 NIC's, 2nd NIC is disconnected.

    Happen again today.

I have about 300 users connected to a Progress database.

The system run 24 hrs a day then all at once they call me and state they have been disconnects from the Database.

I try to ping the server with no response.

I go to the server and Open IE, get webpage can't be found.

Disable the NIC and Reenable it.   Everything works again.

Today I re-enabled TCP Connection Offload.

I disabled this based on some other additional information given to me by Progress.

  • Same issue today.

This time I switched the IP address to the 2nd NIC in the PowerEdge Server.

    It gets more interesting.

The 2nd NIC shows unplugged in Network Connections.

  • I'm having the exact same issue. Except it is now happening more often.   My server is running Windows 2008 R2 with DPM 2010.  I am only using one of the onBoard NICs, the other is disabled.

Last week it did it a couple times but my backup person was working with Microsoft on a DPM issue and I thought it might be related to that.  Last week is went down Friday evening.  I fixed it SaturdayAM.  It ran until last night at 8pm.  I fixed around 9pm.  It lasted 3 hours before happening again.

I tried updating the drivers after 9pm last night.  This morning, I disabled the active NIC and moved over to the other NIC.

I need this server to be reliable.  Did you ever get a fix?

  • I haven't had the issue since doing the following process. (This is week 2)

I changed the driver for the NIC from a Microsoft to Broadcom (I tried this several different was but it would always tell me I had the latest drivers installed. This process worked)

Per a chat with a Dell tech.

I removed the NIC's from the device manager and rebooted. (even though they're reinstalled after logging in again.)

(I had already downloaded the latest driver for the NIC's from Dell's website)

and ran the setup.exe that is under the Driver Management folder and rebooted again.

  • interesting I'm having the same issue.  Dell R410 win2008 r2 running Hyper-v  I thought it was a Hyper-v issue at first but then looking back I can remember having the issue before I installed the Hyper-v role.  I've tried using both Broadcom Nic's but both show the issue.  I lose network connection quite often, and I can't ping anything apart from local host.  I've installed the latest drivers but still seem to have the problem :o(  Both Nic's have fixed IP's
