Azure File Sync volume size limit RRS feed

  • Question

  • Azure File Sync looks very promising for us. The 5TiB volume size limit is far too small to be useful, though. I have read in the past that this limit will be raised. Can anyone tell me when and to what? A roadmap would be very helpful.

  • Hi Mike,

Yes, we are working on raising limits for Azure Files to 100 TiB. We are planning to have a preview in later half of this year. Like Marcin suggested, you could still use multiple shares/sync groups that connect the data to multiple shares in the cloud and workaround the 5 TiB limits.

  • Hi!

I'm afraid I don't have a straight answer, but as of current the 5TiB limit is a hard limit that cannot be adjusted as of now, but as they mentioned they are working on a solution that will increase the size to 100 TiB but I couldn't find any timeline about it yet.

I would suggest to sit tight and follow the link below (Azure File Sync roadmap)

    https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/roadmap/azure-file-sync/

The latest release is the Refresh 2 release for Azure File Sync Agent (Preview): May 2018

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Hi Mike,

could you clarify what specifically is the reason for the 5TiB limit affecting your ability to implement Azure File Sync? You can create multiple server endpoints on the same server (as long as they are not overlapping), which should allow you to sync up multiple on-prem shares of a size larger than 5TiB

  • Thanks for your replies. We work with large amounts of data off scientific instruments. A typical project can generate 30TB of data, and we will have around 20 projects at any one time.
