Azure File Sync - Tiering, Thumbnails, and Network Shares RRS feed

    Tiered files display thumbnails when looking at then on the server they're sync with directly, but not when looking at them over a network share.

    No-tiered files display thumbnails normally.

    Any ideas?

    This is causing massive pain for our staff who work with images all day, most of the files are used very infrequently but are also very large so not being able to see thumbnails to select the right image is a very big problem.

    @Kardrath Apologies for the delay in responding here! 

    Is there anyway to automate downloading the files, updating the thumbnail file so they're visible over network shares, then re-offlining the files?

    No automated way for now.

    @Kardrath Can you share the screenshot and May I know those are media thumbnails? 

    Just for better understanding, When the staff try to launch the same thumbnails in Storage Explorer are they facing the same issue?

    Hi Sumanth,

    Here's a screenshot.

    As you can see files which aren't tiered are displaying the thumbnails correctly, but the tiered files aren't. File types are a variety of image types, but mostly PNG and JPG files.

    Staff don't have access to Storage Explorer, we're using the Auzre File Sync solution to cache the recently accessed files to a local file server.

     Has this always been the case or did it break recently? We're just going down this road, started a initial sync & see new AFS client 8.0 is released. This would be problem for us as well.

    Initial testing looked OK, but as the pictures directory I happened to be using for testing was my own OneDrive Pictures area that had been copied to a test server for the initial sync so it's possible that something else was going on to make it look like it was working.

    As far as I can tell it's never worked for any of the live data syncing multiple shares with both a new Server 2019 end point downloading fresh (for it) shares and a 2016 server that an original data source.

    @Kardrath  Firstly, apologies for the delay in responding here.

    This behavior (thumbnails missing for tiered files) is expected. The thumbnail cache feature in Windows intentionally skips reading files with the offline attribute because reading the files would cause them to be downloaded (recalled).

    Hi Sumanth,

    That's a real pity and massively reduces the utility of the solution for us. Around 1/3rd of our data volume is image files of various types. 

    If that's the case though, why can I see thumbnails for cached files when I RDP directly to the server?

     @Kardrath I suspect the file was in the thumbnail cache on the server before it was tiered. Also, if the file is downloaded locally (offline attribute is not set), the thumbnail will show for the file.

    I can download the files easily enough, but I'm not sure what triggers the thumbnails to be updated, or how to ensure that the offlining only occurs once the thumbnail is updated.
