BitLocker Recovery Key - not stored RRS feed

  • Question

  • My granddaughters Lenovo ideapad surface 2 windows 10.

Since a recent Windows update, the pad has gone into BitLocker Recovery mode.

Have searched her Microsoft account, the recovery key is not stored and she has no thumbdrive or printed. Worrying part is, her school work is on there for her forthcoming exams.

Using cmd prompt through the troubleshooting route and the drive is listed as X:

    Typing  'manage-bde -protectors -get C:'

    This returns:-

Numerical Password ID of 32 characters

No Recovery Key of 48 characters is listed.

    TPM ID of 32 characters.

With these numerical passwords/ID's is there any way of attaining the Recovery Key.

  • Without knowing the key, there's no way to get the key, no. The ID is just a name.

Use your backup. If you have no backup, your only chance is to find out, where the recovery key was saved, maybe to a different microsoft account that was in use earlier? Since on Windows 10 home, the bitlocker activation is done automatically, the key must be in a cloud account.
