[Troubleshooting] Basic checklist for upgrade failure issue RRS feed

  • Follow these steps to basically check upgrade failure issue.

    • Please can you run through the below actions on a problem device and then re-attempt an upgrade.
    • If after carrying out the below actions, the upgrade continues to fail please answer the scoping questions below and run through the data
    • Ensure any nonessential hardware is removed from the device prior to upgrade e.g. removeable hard disks, USB connected devices etc.
    • Check the system drive for errors by running "chkdsk /F" from an Admin CMD prompt
    • Check for any corruption to system files by running sfc /scannow from an Admin CMD prompt
    • Check for servicing corruption by running - DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an Admin CMD prompt
    • Ensure the system is up to date with the latest Windows Updates installed
    • Ensure there is adequate disk space available on the machine, as a general rule 20-32gb will be required but confirm version specific details on
    • If non-Microsoft Anti-Virus software is installed, (if possible, temporarily uninstall) otherwise please disable using the AV UI then confirm that the filter drivers are not loaded by running FLTMC from an Admin CMD prompt
    • If using 3rd party disk encryption, does the upgrade complete successfully with the disk unencrypted
    • Check if any firmware / driver updates exist for the problem hardware by checking the vendor site, if so, update the system
    • Ensure system has been restarted to allow any pending file changes to be processed
