Relation between WSUS and SUP in SCCM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

May I know the role / responcebility of SUP service? is it intermediate/mediator between WSUS to SCCM server?

WSUS is windows server OS feature. SUP is SCCM feature. So without SCCM, WSUS will work. But to work on windows updates in SCCM, SUP is required. so I am suspecting SUP role is intermediate between WSUS to SCCM. am I correct?

How SCCM is syncing with WSUS?

  • The SUP role is a [thin] layer of management on top of WSUS. It facilitates WSUS configuration by ConfigMgr as well as update catalog synchronization from WSUS to the ConfigMgr database.

  • Hello,

Yes, we could say that. SUP transfers configuration to WSUS so we do not need to operate WSUS directly; And SUP get update metadata from WSUS so we can manage/deploy/query updates in SCCM.

For the management part, we could check the WCM.log. It records details about the software update point configuration and connections to the WSUS server for subscribed update categories, classifications, and languages.

For the synchronization part, we could check wsyncmgr.log. It records details about the software updates sync process. In brief, firstly WSUS gets updates metadata from internet and stores them in the WSUS database, then WSUS Synchronization Manager synchronizes the software updates metadata from the WSUS database to the Configuration Manager database. Refer to the following link to understand the process in detail.

Hope my answer could help you and look forward to your feedback.

    Best Regards,
    Ray
