Windows 8.1 SkyDrive doesn't sync in domain account RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello! I have installed a leaked 8.1 RTM and joined it to an AD domain at work. Then attached a LiveID account in settings, with default checkboxes set. All settings like avatar, wallpaper, color theme etc. synced successfully, but no files in SkyDrive folder. Just an empty "Documents" folder, which really doesn't exist on my SkyDrive. Yep, I read this topic, but there is no actual solution, offered answer doesn't work. Please, help.

  • Following on from CouwenberghM post about Redirection. I do not have any redirection, but a group policy settings for DisablePersonalDirChange set to 1 in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. if I set this to 0 and start the skydrive.exe process it then works.

    Bingo!!! It works! Thank you very much, Gareth!

    In my case, problem was because following group policy was set:

    User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar \ Prohibit user from changing My Documents path

    or, starting Windows Vista:

    User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Desktop \ Prohibit User from manually redirecting Profile Folders

    To resolve problem, setting should be set to Disable or Not set.

  • Hi,

    Firstly, to view the skydrive, you must log on Windows 8.1 with the Microsoft account.

    Then, please try directly to stop and start SkyDrive to check the issue.

    The easiest way to do this is, from a command prompt:

    c:\> %systemdrive%\windows\system32\skydrive.exe /shutdown

    You can confirm in TaskManager that the process has exited. It may take up to 10 seconds to exit, but if it goes past a minute, you may need to forcibly kill it from within Task Manager.

    Then restart it with:

    c:\> %systemdrive%\windows\system32\skydrive.exe

    And again, confirm in Task Manager that it has started, does synchronization work this time?

    If not, please try to disable the firewall and security program, restart the Skydrive to check the results

    We can also follow these steps to "reset" SkyDrive.

    1.  Disconnected the account from my domain account

    2.  Backed up all the data on the local drive.

    3.  Deleted the contents of C:\users\<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive

    4.  Deleted the contents of C:\users\<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\SkyDrive.

    5.  Deleted the contents of C:\users\<username>\SkyDrive

    6.  Reconnected my Microsoft account to my domain account.

    If the issue still persists, please help to post event log and skydrive log here for further research:

    You can find it here: C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive\logs\.

    Look forward to your response.

  • Thanks for reply. Below I wrote what I've done.

    0. Installed all available updates through Windows Update;
    1. Attached Live account to domain account. SkyDrive.exe not started ( log ...1968-1.etl);
    2. Ran skydrive.exe. Nothing appeared in task manager (log ...1936-1.etl);
    3. Logged off and on. Skydrive.exe started (log ...676-1.etl);
    4. Opened cmd.exe, ran skydrive /shutdown. Skydrive.exe disappeared from task manager (log ...3460-1.etl);
    5. Ran skydrive.exe. It appeared in task manager (log ...1316-1.etl);
    6. Waited for about 10 minutes;
    7. Disconnect Live account from domain account. SkyDrive.exe disappeared from Taskmgr, no new log file created;
    8. Nothing to backup, SkyDrive folder still contains the only folder "Documents", which is empty;
    9. Deleted the contents of AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive, except of logs folder;
    10. Folder AppData\Local\Microsoft\SkyDrive doesn't exist, nothing to delete;
    11. Deleted anything from %userprofile%\SkyDrive folder, including desktop.ini;
    12. Connected Live account to Domain account again. SkyDrive.exe started (log ...1924-1.etl).

    After these actions, nothing changed. Empty folder "Documents" created, AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\SkyDrive\settings created, AppData\Local\Microsoft\SkyDrive did not created, documents from SkyDrive did not appear.
    All logs here: http://sdrv.ms/150XvBe (File SkyDrive_fail.zip)

    P.S.: What did you mean under "to view the skydrive, you must log on Windows 8.1 with the Microsoft account"? Syncing Skydrive folder under domain account is unsupported?

  • Hi,

    It seems that you use PC settings\Accounts\Connect to your Microsoft account.

    If I was right, please try to attach your LiveID by using PC settings\skydrive\Connect to your Microsoft account

    Let me know what’s going on.

  • Not so easy. At first, there is no such item in settings - "SkyDrive\Connect". There are four items in PC Settings\SkyDrive (I could mistake in translation, cause I have russian windows installed): Stogare space, Camera roll, Sync settings, Limited connections. That's all, maybe in non-domain account there are more items.

    However, I can see a link for connecting LiveID to my account in "storage space", but it does the same: SkyDrive folder is still empty (I repeated actions above, of course).

  • Hi,

    I just found following articles, it seems that Skydrive can work fine only when you using Microsoft account to log on your Windows 8.1:

  • Hi guys,

    my skydrive isn´t syncing, too.

    That´s cause, skydrive isn´t running on my PC. If I start skydrive manually from the system32 Folder, nothing happens, no Event log entrie, nothing.

    Is there a way to manually install skydrive on Windows 8.1?

    The only thing I could find are some Log-Files. The first one I see very often:

    Can somebody tell me, how to reinstall skydrive to Windows 8.1?

    Thank you.

  • So you are saying a GREAT feature (skydrive) that worked just fine in Windows 8 with the desktop app and logging in via a domain, is now BROKEN in 8.1??

    How can you do that to your corporate customers?

    Also, with the desktop app, you could have different usernames at home and work, but use the same skydrive account and they would both sync.

    Again, you broke this?  Again, why?

    I actually like the increased sync option in 8.1 for MOST CONSUMER users - MOST.

    But for some, and for corporate users, this break is unacceptable.  Get your act together.  Do a desktop version of the app that works and install on 8.1 - DUH!

    Not to mention you loose the fetch option you had before!!

    This will only increase the H8 for W8!!  again, WHY?

    Like your remote desktop app, I like the 8 and 8.1 better MOST of the time.  But, there are limits to this app - and there are times I have to use the desktop version.

    The same is true with skydrive - only you don't give me the option to use the desktop version - again, what bonehead did not think this could be a problem???  FIX IT!!

  • I am having the same problems.

    I am testing different scenario's and found out that domain users who do not have a roaming profile and do not have a redirection of folder to network locations, do not have this problem.

    So i am currently deleting roaming profiles and adjusting redirect setting for user who want to have this problem fixed.

    But of corse this not the solution!
