Biztalk Server 2013 R2 compatibility with SQL Server 2016 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I inherited some applications running on Biztalk 2013 R2 and the DBA wants to update the SQL Server instance to 2016. Our Biztalk isn't being used for a lot but we do have a few things running on there for now. Are the two compatible?

  • No, BizTalk Server 2013R2 does not support SQL Server 2016.  There is no way around this.

    Please refer: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj248697.aspx

SQL Server 2016 is only compatible with BizTalk Server 2016. https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/mt763885.aspx

  • Check the upgrade paths if SQL Server 2016 is a must

  • NO.  You cannot do that.

Even more important, the DBA's do not own the BizTalk SQL instances, ever.  So, they really shouldn't have any say in what version is running.

I'm totally serious about this.  It's about 50/50 the DBA's mess things up for BizTalk which then becomes your problem.

  • It's a misunderstanding and imo a bit stupid to have walls between departments
Proper education is always the better choice

  • Unfortunately, 20+ years of experience has taught me the bigger the wall between the "DBAs" and BizTalk (or any application really) the better.

The notion that SQL Server, and more importantly the databases, are some special entities is a chronic and widespread problem.

    The apps own the databases.

  • Might be due to differences in work/country culture

If it happened in DK I'd say it's an issue of weak management rather than inadequate dbas
