How can I tell if 2008 R2 AD recyle bin is turned on? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is there a way to see in ADSI edit or something that shows if the Recycle bin is turned on for a 2008 R2 domain?  Are there any good GUI based third party tools for recovering deleted objects after enabled the recycle bin?

◦To verify that Active Directory Recycle Bin is enabled, navigate to the CN=Partitions container. In the details pane, locate the msDS-EnabledFeature attribute, and confirm that its value is set to CN=Recycle Bin Feature,CN=Optional Features,CN=Directory Service,CN=Windows NT,CN=Services,CN=Configuration, DC=domainName,DC=ext.

if ENABLEDSCOPES contains values, then it is enabled! As you can see above, in my AD forest it is disabled. Remember: after enabling, you cannot disable it anymore!

  • For those who like pictures, here is me enabling the feature for my forest "testlab.local".  I then highlighted the "enabledscopes" attribute:

     When this value isn't populated (e.g. {} ) it's off.
