PXE Booting Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • Certain models of computer will not UEFI PXE boot unless in the server VLAN. These are Viglens and 1 model of HP laptop. These computers have worked and PXE'd in the past, but cores switches have changed and so have the DHCP servers, although options kept the same.

We have: HP Core Switches with IP Helper configured. Dell Edge Switches have tried with and without ip helpers on.
    SCCM Server with latest patches
1 server VLAN and then individual building VLANS

    Have tried:
    No DHCP options 60/66/67
Tried DHCP with various options of 60/66/67
Options 66 and 67 all the rest of the model computers will PXE.
If I turn on legacy by altering option 67 the Viglens will PXE but I don't really want to change the BIOSs of 300+ viglens...

I am running out of ideas... Help?

  • Hi,

Generally speaking, for PXE boot support, IP Helpers must be configured on the routers if any of the DHCP server, the client computer, or the Configuration Manager server that is running WDS and the PXE-enabled DP are on separate subnets or VLANs. we don't recommend using DHCP options

    Please check the following points:

1.In SMSPXE.log, you shoud see the MAC address or the DHCPREQUEST of the device that you are trying to start. If you don’t see that, a router configuration issue might exist between the client and the DP.
2.Do not use DHCP options 60, 66, or 67. This is not recommended.
3.Test whether the device can start when it is plugged into a switch on the same subnet as the PXE-enabled DP. If it can, the issue likely involves the router configuration.
4.Make sure that the DHCP (67 and 68), TFTP (69), and BINL (4011) ports are open between the client computer, the DHCP server, and the PXE DP.

For more information about PXE boot, please refer to:

Hope my answer could help you. Thanks for your time.

  • It'll be because the new devices are booting using UEFI mode and not BIOS mode.

If you have configured option 67 on the DHCP scope to be either PXEboot.com for BIOS or Bootmgfw.efi for UEFI then devices of the opposite type will not be able to boot.

In order to support both device types you need to migrate the PXE configuration to be IP helpers only. This will forward the broadcast packets to the SCCM DP server and then the server can decide which file to respond with.

The reason it will be working when you connect the systems to the server VLAN will be because you are bypassing the DHCP server and the PXE broadcast is being received directly by the SCCM DP server. That is the behaviour you simulate by using IP helpers instead of DHCP options.

  • Thanks for your reply.
IP Helpers were configured for DHCP Server, DHCP Server 2 and SCCM Server on Cores.
All the options in DHCP were removed. Options 60/66/67 were only tried in desperation.

Certain computers are quite happy with this and will UEFI boot, certain ones won't. The computers that didn't DID UEFI boot prior to change in core switches and update of DHCP servers.

As i've said in the server VLAN, these computers will UEFI boot, however when in the client VLANs not. Below is the SCCM log entry for this server trying to UEFI boot, it doesn't get any further. The relay agent show is the core switch. So it is getting to the SCCM server just not any further.

Have tried deleting computer entries in SCCM and AD also.

  • I think you should get your network team to work with you on this.. as far as I can tell, this just might be a misconfiguration on the router/switch..

  • Hi RHarris77,

Thanks for your reply. Please try the following actions:

    1. On your PXE DP settings, enable the option "Enable a PXE responder without Windows Deployment Service."

    2. Remove the TFTP windows size and block size registry values on the PXE DP.

    3. Check if you have put wrong DNS servers into Switch Vlan configuration.

  • I agree but as I work in education - I am the IT manager, network team and have several other hats. Sadly this means I can't and don't know everything.

I've pasted the config below in case anything jumps out at anyone.

  • 1) - Makes no differece

    2) - If you mean RamDiskTFTPWindowSize and TFTPBlockSize these are already not there.

    3) - I've included some of the switch config above, but DNS isn't setup in the VLAN config.

  • In the log file there are 2 computers trying to PXE boot.

30:9c:23:47:c2:52: - This one doesn't get the file or go any further.  This is the same as about half our IT estate.

18:60:24:f4:0d:7c:: This one (in the same VLAN) does get the file and PXE boots. This is the same as the rest of our IT estate.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

May you find any clues when examining the smsts.log on the target system. Please refer to: SCCM How to copy SMSTS.log when a Task Sequence fails

    Best regards,
    Simon

  • The computer doesn't get as far as a task sequence so there wouldn't be a log.

According to your logs, there are no TS deployments for the client.

You need to deploy a TS to a collection that includes your client.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

1.Firstly, please help select the TS deployment option "Configuration manager clients, media and PXE" to make sure the client could get the TS policy. Or please deploy a new TS to a collection that includes your client as Kerwin mentioned.

2.If possible, please start the TS from Software Center on a device that already have CM client agent in the same VLAN to have a try. So that we can make sure if the boundary groups are configured correctly and the DP/MP work well.

    Thanks and regards,
    Simon

  • We basically only use 3 task sequences. All of these tasks sequences are deployed to groups that include all Windows 10 workstations  (and include the offending PCs) and include unknown computers as well. I have tried redeploying these already.

Task sequences are successful via software centre on the offending Pcs.

  • PC will PXE boot in the server VLAN regardless, but not PXE in the client VLAN and task sequence will run either in server VLAN or the client vlans

Quickly, sounds like IPhelper is not working. Do you still strugle with this, I could review this enitre thread then…

  • Hi,

    Please help try the followings:

1.Accociate correct boot image with the task sequence. Don't forget to add the NIC to the boot image.
2.If possible, please enable a PXE-enabled DP in clients VLAN.
3.Double check the IP Help configuration.

    Thanks and regards,
    Simon

  • 1) Boot images are already associated with the task sequence (bear in mind the same task sequence is working on some PCs) NICs were already in the boot image bearing in mind this used to work.

    2) I am not sure what you mean - there is only one DP which can be accessed by some computers but not others - VLAN configuration is higher up in the chain, I am not sure what you'd need to put in VLAN configuration to do what you're suggesting?

    3) Ip helpers point to 2 x DHCP servers and 1 x seperate SCCM server - this has already been checked.

  • Given that some computers can image/PXE in client VLANS this would suggest that the ip helpers are working

  • No, the above error doesn't really make sense. The task sequences are deployed to Windows 10 computers and unknown computers. The computer when moved into server VLAN works and doesn't work in the client VLAN.
    Wednesday, October 16, 2019 11:49 AM
  • You need to make sure of that in reality, by pressing F12 and same time go through smspxe.log, what really happends.

  • Can you please share the SMSPXE log file for this client in that case where it succeeds in the server VLAN?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Please help compare the difference between the successful client in server VLAN and the failed client in client VLAN in the Smspxe.log. Can we see any clues?

    Thanks and regards,

  • Thanks.....Log file below (can't post clickable links) - there is an unsuccessful PXE boot in a client VLAN and then the successful boot in the server VLAN.

It fails in the request stage but its not obvious to me why.

  • You can see from my previous response that the client that is failing does not have a TS deployment for it.

In this new log that you shared, the client is succeeding because it has a TS deployment for it.

    These are two different clients.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your response. This is the same client, (they have the same mac address:30:9c:23:47:c2:52:)

I patched machine into the client VLAN which has a 10.100.24.x address, it failed to PXE.

Plugged into the Server VLAN which has 10.100.3.x address, where it PXE boots correctly.

The issue is as far as I can see is why the SCCM server would deal with the same client differently on seperate VLANs.

Can you point out the specific line where you are seeing that the client is failing as it doesn't have a TS deployment?

    Thanks

    Ross

  • In the previous log that you shared the MAC address of the client is 00:15:5D:E2:2F:72. Please see my previous post. There it shows that there is no deployment for that MAC address.

I think your logs an examples are so convoluted now. I think you should start from scratch.

    1. Delete the logs.

    2. Boot the client in the VLAN that works.

    3. Boot the same client in the VLAN that does not work.

    4. Now, share the log file. This log file should only have TWO entries for ONE client - a set of logs for a successful boot and set of logs for a failed boot, all for the same ONE MAC address.
