Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable (x64) -14.16.27027 setup fails on Windows 8.1 RRS feed

  • The redistributable mentioned in the title fails to install on Windows 8.1 with the error: 0x80240017 - Unspecified error.  When I examine the log file I see the following:

    [169C:16A4][2019-06-10T09:57:37]i301: Applying execute package: Windows81_x64, action: Install, path: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\3ACBF3890FC9C8A6F3D2155ECF106028E5F55164\packages\Patch\x64\Windows8.1-KB2999226-x64.msu, arguments: '"C:\WINDOWS\SysNative\wusa.exe" "C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\3ACBF3890FC9C8A6F3D2155ECF106028E5F55164\packages\Patch\x64\Windows8.1-KB2999226-x64.msu" /quiet /norestart'
    [169C:16A4][2019-06-10T09:57:38]e000: Error 0x80240017: Failed to execute MSU package.

    When I then attempt to manually install the referenced package I get the error:

    The update is not applicable to your computer.

    Based on your description, please try the following methods to troubleshoot:

    1. Perform Clean Boot.

    2. Delete Temporary Files from your PC.

    3. Re-register Windows Installer service.

    4. Run DISM Tool.
