Bitlocker will not accept recovery key on an encrypted USB drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • We need to transport critical information from computer to computer and we use an encrypted USB drive. When trying to use the recovery key instead of the password the bitlocker states it its the wrong key even though the key id is correct and the recovery key is from the file saved when the USB was encrypted.

What can we do to recover the information on this drive?

  • Hi,

Does the encrypted harddrive with BitLocker required for password when you try to decrypt it?

Try to check if it is available to decrypt it with password.

Please check the error messages recorded in Event Viewer(Windows Logs\Applications and System, Applications and Services Logs\Microsoft\Windows\Bitlocker-API and Bitlocker Driver Perparetion Tool).

Try to repair bitlocker with repair key as the following command (run as administrator).

    repair-bde C: Z: -rk F:\RecoveryKey.bek

Or we could repair bitlocker with password in command line:

    repair-bde C: Z: -rp 062612-026103-175593-225830-027357-086526-362263-513414

Please replace C with the drive letter which stores your vital data. Replace Z with the destination drive letter you want to migrate to.
