Home Networking and Printer Drivers RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm setting  up a network with 3 XP (SP2) computers, and a new Windows 7- 64 bit computer.

I can usually, but not always, see the three XP computers in a network, and I can usually see a Canon dot matrix printer.  I can print to the dot matrix with the XP machines.  I've installed 64 bit drivers from Canon, and can print to the dot matrix from the 64 bit Win 7, but only if the printer is hard connected (USB) to the Win 7 machine.

If I try to print from the Win 7 to the dot matrix when it's USB'd to another XP computer, the print command directs itself to the internet, looking for a driver update.

Has anyone else had similar problems mixing 32 and 64 bit hardware.  I thought Win 7 had a good grip on backward compatibilty issues.
