Windows Easy Transfer for transferring from Windows XP (32 bit) to Windows 7 (64 bit) - cannot read .DAT file? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I'm having problems with the Windows Easy Transfer after changing my OS to Windows 7.

I used the Windows Easy Transfer to back up my files from my "old computer" when my computer had Windows XP. In this process it saved my files and settings to the USB key I am using as a number of .DAT files in a folder named USMT2.UNC.

Now when I use the Windows Easy Transfer to try and get my files and settings on my "new computer" (after the installation of Windows 7), it will not read my .DAT files. It looks like it will only recognize an Easy Transfer File.

Does anyone have any advice for this?

How I could force the transfer to recognize my .DAT files or how to convert my .DAT files into an Easy Transfer file?

Any help with this would be really appreciated! I'm really stuck without my files.

    Thanks,

    Georgia

  • To transfer content from Windows XP to Windows 7 via Windows Easy Transfer, Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP must be installed in Windows XP. This is required because, the working of Windows Easy Transfer present in Windows XP and Windows 7 differs. Therefore, content backed up using Windows XP's Windows Easy Transfer can't be used with Windows 7's Windows Easy Transfer.
