Too many 16-bit programs configured for Vista (SP1 Home Premium x32) compatibility mode RRS feed

  • Question

  • What does one do when one receives the Vista SP1 OS message that "too many 16-bit applications running" in XP or DOS compatibility mode?  I barely caught a glimpse of the message when I attempted to install a new application on my system - the message indicated that some file needed manipulating to expand the configuration file...but I was unable to discern its name (sysconfig.log ???) before the message expired.

Based on what I could discern in the OS Event Viewer from the Application & Service Logs > Microsoft Windows > Program Compatibility Assistant, I think I had eleven entries, so my guess is that the default is ten.

    Any help appreciated
