Data Mining Add-ins for Excel 2016 where are they? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently use SQL server enterprise edition, we leverage the BI stack including the Data mining capabilities.  Excel 2013 has working data mining add ins found here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=49997

We have used these for a long time without issue.  We are now moving to Excel 2016.

I am not aware of any other download for Excel 2016.  This download does not work with Excel 2016, I have tried every which way to install it including installing excel 2013 then 2016 but I always get the same error when I go to install the add in above (64 bit as that is the version of excel 2016 I use) "Setup is missing prerequisites:  64 bit version of office 2010".

It's hard to believe that there is no add in release for 2016 yet, search as I may though I can't find anything.  Can anyone point me in the right direction for the download if it in fact exists?  If not are there any work-arounds/hacks to get this working?

There is another post asking about this but nothing on the subject since the end of last year, still nothing maybe?

    thanks,

    D

  • According to this document, it's still in CTP2 (testing) and not yet released and available for download:

  • Yes, I saw this before, can't believe it's still hasn't been looked at, I wonder if it is even something that will get done?

  • Any official update to this (Excel 2016 + Data mining add-in)?

  • I'm also having trouble getting an answer on this, and am unwilling to spend $500 to get the answer from their support staff. Yes, I was twice asked to create a $500 ticket to get this question answered.  - Jaycee

  • Couldn't agree more, it seems absurd that nobody can give a clear cut answer as to the status of this, or if there is even going to be a plugin and that to get that answer you need to spend $500......

  • I got things working by downloading the Data Mining Client Add-in for SQL Server 2012 SP4. It was released on October 5, 2017, and installs seamlessly in my Excel 2016 setup (make sure to download the appropriate x86 or x64 package for your Excel installation).

  • I don't know why but I still get this message Elliot it won't let me install the 32 bit or 64 bit.  I have excel 2016 professional plus 2016 installed 32 bit and windows 10.  Have you made any registry tweaks or any other changes?

  • I managed to find a "registry hack" in order to get the installation to proceed.

Adding the following key did the trick...

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\InstallRoot]
    "Path"="C:\\"

I also wrote a short guide at Install data mining add-in in Excel 2016

  • Thanks I will try this and see how it goes.

  • That's it as for today (25th Aug, 2018).

    1) Download the "MS-SQL-Srv_2012-SP4_Data-Mining-Add-ins-for-MS-Office" from <https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=56047>

    2) Make sure that no "Office 2016" application is open.

    3) Install the <SQL_AS_DMAddin.msi> file. You'll have the option to install this add-in to Visio and/or Excel

    4) Open Excel and/or Visio and you will find the "Data Mining" tab in Excel ribbon, or under the "Add-Ins" tab in Visio ribbon.

Only one annoying thing; is that you will be asked to either install a copy from SQL Server on the same machine or connect to a SQL Server each time you open Excel/Visio.

  • Kudos for you, worked for my x64 Excel 2006 .

  • I'm running the Data Mining Add-ins on Excel for Office 365 MSO (16.0.12624.20422) 64 bit.

It's on the same machine running MS SQL Server 2017 loaded with the sample datasets and analysis services.

(A year ago... i installed the add-in for evaluation purposes and it still launches.)

I feared it would only run with Excel 2013... but so far... everything is still okay.
