  Pretty sure you only have to use the 2010 ESM or EMC to modify the

  group. That should update the version of the object and add the

  necessary properties to the group.

  For upgrading the Distribution groups to the new version run the below command in Exchange 2010 EMS.

  Get-DistributionGroup –ResultSize Unlimited | Set-DistributionGroup –ForceUpgrade

  This will upgrade all the distribution Groups within an Organization to the Exchange 2010 version.

  You can also upgrade the DL's manually , however it will be very tedious as you need to edit each DL manually change some property and save it. This will give a prompt to upgrade the DL to the new version. On clicking yes the DL will be upgarded.

  Once all the DL's are upgarded you will be able to use the  feature provided in Exchange 2010.

  Thanks, do you know how we'd upgrade the DL manually via the EMC?

  To upgrade a DL manually via EMC you need to edit the DL change some property (E.g. Delete some text in the NAme and re enter again) and save it. This will give a prompt to upgrade the DL to the new version. On clicking yes the DL will be upgarded.
