  • The problem appears to be related to installing SQL Express on a Domain Controller - in this case the only server for our small network

The Microsoft advice is to "set the Service Account to Domain Account" during installation - unfortunately I do not know what this means

I am signed in as a Domain Admin

  • Hi BVitter,

Based on your screenshot, Service Account (NT SERVICE\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS) is a local account. You could change it to a Domain Admin (Domain\username), and enter the password in the “Password” column.

    Hope this could help you.

  • Where do you see -2061893606? Within the message you posted see:

    Component error code: 0x851A001A

0x851A001A is hexadecimal for -2061893606. Microsoft uses the hexadecimal version for describing errors, so search for 0x851A001A. You will get many results including:

Your problem seems to be specific to Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search so search as in this.

  • The error " Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes." means that when Setup attempted to start SQL Server run install scripts, SQL Server did not start. As the error message says, you need to check the SQL Server errorlog to find out what went wrong. Provided that you went with the defaults, you find the file in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL14.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\LOG\ERRORLOG

The failure occurs because, on a domain controller, the service cannot create the 20 local accounts required to run machine learning. Please refer to Known issues in SQL Server Machine Learning Services for more details.

And it is not recommended to install SQL Server on a domain controller for security reasons. You cannot run SQL Server services on a domain controller under a local service account. You could use domain accounts as service account during installation. For more details, please refer to Installing SQL Server on a Domain Controller.

In addition, here is a similar thread might be helpful to you.

    Hope this could help you.
