Migrate user profile to new PC or Migrate user profile from one Domain to another - USMT RRS feed

  • Question

  • HI

We can easily backup and restore User profiles with USMT when just reinstalling/upgraing a PC.

However itbecomes a really big problem

    • when replacing hardware (new PC) or even worse,
    • when we (soon) will be moving staff to our new aqusitioners Domain.

I see from the documentation that it should be possible with USMT but I find it really confusing.

    Migrating user to new PC

To migrate user profiles from one PC to another with SCCM you must link the PC's in SCCM
I apparently cannot post links but google
"How to Create a Computer Association for Side-by-Side Deployment"

However we gave up on this rather tedious method long ago and our supporters does not have access to our SCCM anyway.

Instead we always run USMT separately to ensure the backup is there, and it's simplifying everything!

With USMTGUI as a to-go tool for everyday support and "User Profile Central", also from USMTGUI.com, as our main centralized profile management tool, we simply connect to the PC's remotely, or locally in Helpdesk, and backup and restore the profile or profiles from any PC to another.

    Migrating user to new Domain

The way I'd go about this would be to use User Profile Central for backup on the old Domain, move the backups over to the new Corp Domain and there again use User Profile Central restoring the user profiles to the new Domain PC's. You can even change the profiles name during restore if the user got a new user ID.

In case of questions better ask them at usmtgui.com, as I do not go by this forum often..

  • IF you want to migrate users to a new domain while imaging the PC USMT has a built-in switch for this.
