Activating the Essential role in Windows Server 2012 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are planning to upgrade our Windows Small Business Server 2011 to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. I would like to run Essentials in a virtual machine and I am considering two scenarios:

    1) Buy Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials. This will give us an extra virtual machine license, but we need to purchase both licenses separately.

    2) Buy Windows Server 2012 R2 and install the Essentials role in one of the two virtual machines. This will save on the licensing costs of Essentials, but we will need buy CALs for our users (about 10). In this scenario I am not sure the price difference will be significant and we will also have only one other VM.

A second question that arises with option 2 is: when installing the Essentials role in Windows Server 2012 R2, does the server reconfigure itself with the right options and roles or it installs just the console and there is lots of work to do to configure it as a standard Essentials server?

    Thank you for your suggestions.
