how to migrate windows server 2011 sbs to essentials 2016/19 RRS feed RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have just started recently as an IT technician for a company who have not maintained their infrastructure very well.

We have server 2011 sbs on a very old server. I would like to buy a new server and move to essentials 2016 or 2019 on the new server.

Is there a way to move everything including configuration and software to the new server?

I would appreciate any help here

  • Hi,

We can migrate from SBS to Windows Server Essentials, then, configuration and data will all be kept.

Migration steps you can reference “Migrate Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials to Windows Server Essentials”:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/migrate/migrate-windows-small-business-server-2011-essentials-to-windows-server-essentials

If you still want to use functions, such as RWA(remote web access), Dashboard (centralized management for client devices), built-in configuration wizard for Anywhere Access and etc. I would recommend you to consider of Windows Server 2016 essentials, it provides most similar functions as SBS version.

For Windows Server 2019 Essentials, the Windows Server Essentials Experience Role has been removed from all server SKUs, it means that the Administrative Dashboard that used to be the core feature for Essentials Experience Role is no longer accessible and all management and configuration must be completed manually.

You can download both WSE 2016 and 2019 evaluation version from Microsoft Evaluation Center, build test VMs and choose the one which is meet your requirements:

    Best Regards,
