Upgrading SCCM CB 1706 to 1806 - How to Restore when upgrade Failed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Team,

planning to migrate SCCM CB 1706 to 1806, I have few Questionnaires about restoration, Plase clarify on them..

in case upgrade failed, will it restore automatically or do we need to perform the recovery from CD.Latest folder?

if we have to recover using the backup will it be possible to restore in the same server (where the Current Site Server Running)? or do we need a new server?

please share any article for the same...

    Thanks!

  • Migration or upgrade? You've used both words but both mean something completely different.

For upgrade, it depends on the failure what happens. Failures are quite rare though and in general ConfigMgr recovers fairly gracefully.

Yes, you can restore to the same server if the failure is that drastic.

  • The official documentation almost always has information: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/manage/checklist-for-installing-update-1806

  • Hi,

We could follow below guide to upgrade SCCM CB to 1806, we can run prerequisite check before installing update pack, and if prerequisite check passed, the upgrade process will not fail usually.

  • Hi,

Please refer to these if you want to plan for disaster. As I understand, if you have a stable site backup AND full Source and Content saved then you would be able to recover from a complete meltdown:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/manage/backup-and-recovery

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/manage/recover-sites

I have completed dozens of in console updates now and after initiating I close console and use cmtrace to monitor CMUpdate.log/hman.log/compmon.log. After ~1 hour most often all the components that were listed in compmon.log are reinstated so I then open console and update as prompted. Then check site/component status in console (sorted by last status message time) and check if any errors or warnings are still relevant.

Good luck but as they are saying above, if prereq checks pass, and you are patient, it very rarely fails.
