Backup failing due to change tracking v2008 R2 SP4 RRS feed

  • Question

  • One of our client database was recently updated to (select @@version=):

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP4) - 10.0.6000.29 (X64)

Then the teams in charge of backup reported the backup failing due to change tracking:

2019-10-24 02:26:09 avsql Error <40258>: sqlconnectimpl_smo::execute Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot insert duplicate key row in object 'sys.syscommittab' with unique index 'si_xdes_id'. The duplicate key value is (888718694).
Failed to flush the commit table to disk in dbid 16 due to error 2601. Check the errorlog for more information.
A nonrecoverable I/O error occurred on file "REDACTED" 995(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15105).
    BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

We had to immediately take action and disabled change_tracking everywhere.

Microsoft states that this is fixed by newer versions here:

(I cannot yet post links, please search for "microsoft 2682488" )

However, I cannot see SP4 in the list of possible fixes. Even more strangely, things were working with change tracking before the update. I am not sure, but think SP2 was installed.

What can be done in this case to have change_tracking working again?
