We have common huge project in MS Project 2016

    Frage

  • All our department created it during some weeks. All the data were checked many times. Unfortunately now, we don't have access to our .mpp file. When one of our colleagues added new data to .mpp, machine froze and she had to reboot computer. Now our projects or isn't opened or it opened with message: "An unexpected problem occurred while opening the file. The file may be damaged. Try using a backup copy". We don't have backup copy to recover ms project file. We've lack of ideas now.

  • Hello MurphKim,

This forum is for development issue related to Office Object Model and I think your issue is more related to Project product feature, so I will move your thread to Project Standard and Professional General Questions and Answers forum.

    Thanks for understanding,

    Best Regards,

  • MurphKim,

Sorry but without a saved backup you are probably out of luck with respect to recovering your Project file(s). If Project itself still works, you could try method 3 in the following Wiki article:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/32054.ms-project-clearing-file-corruption-andor-bloat.aspx

If that doesn't work, you could try a third party Project recovery application such as described in the following:

    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/MS-recovery-tool-for-MPP-f44115b8

    Hope this helps.

    Restoring the Database

To restore the Project Server database, you can use the restore feature of Microsoft SQL Server. After you restore the database, you must delete and then re-create the MSProjectServerUser and MSProjectUser accounts to make sure that the correct passwords are configured. To do this, follow these steps:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/File-formats-supported-by-Project-2013-f2b6710f-e6c6-4767-92de-15e482776916

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
    2. Expand Microsoft SQL Servers, expand SQL Server Group, expand your Microsoft Project Server database server, and then expandDatabases.
    3. Right-click the Microsoft Project Server database, point to All Tasks, and then click Restore Database.
    4. From the list of backups, click the backup to restore, and then click OK to start the restore.
    5. Click OK to confirm that the restore completed successfully.

To delete and re-create the database users, follow these steps:

    1. Expand your restored Project Server database.
    2. Click Users, and then click the MSProjectServerUser user.
    3. Press DELETE, and then click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    4. Click MSProjectUser, and then press DELETE.
    5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
    6. Right-click Users, and then click New Database User.
    7. Under Login name, click MSProjectServerUser, and then under Database role membership select MSProjectServerRole.
    8. Click OK.
    9. Right-click Users, and then click New Database User.

  • Create a new project, insert your project into the new file (Project, Subproject) unchecking "Link to Project".

If the file opens as a subproject, save the new file with a new name. Clean up.

    Ensure you create a backup.
