Project Server 2013: Approach for capacity planning/ Update of hammock tasks between PWA and Project client RRS feed

  • Frage

  • Dear all,

currently we try to implement a capacity planning approach where a set of key milestones is updated in a project plan and the hammock tasks (link to MS knowledge base) between these key milestones are updated automatically with regard to duration and effort. So the focus is here on receiving the milestone (estimate) from the project manager and to calculate the resource demand based on the duration between two milestone as well as the assigned resource profile (resource A 10%, resource B 15%).

In project client this works quite well: the dates of the milestones are copied and special pasted into the columns "Start" and "Finish" of the hammock tasks and manual setting of the start dates of the milestones automatically recalculates the duration of the hammock tasks. Additionally the effort of the resources that are assigned to the hammock tasks is calculated as desired.

Unfortunately it seems that this approach can not be implemented using PWA: key milestones can be updated in PWA but the hammock tasks mechanism doesn't work there and even an update of milestones dates done in PWA cannot be processed by hammock tasks in Project client. Can you confirm this?

Optionally do you have an idea how to implement this requirement (set milestones and system calculates resource demands for phases between the milestones). We already had the idea to process/calculate the resource demand based on the milestone dates in a reporting solution.

Thank you for your support and kind regards

  • Hi Philipp,

PWA don't support hammock tasks. This feature can only be used and calulated in Project Client. For havy resource and capacity planning debending on special dates or milestones you have to use Project Pro. PWA is for light planning and for analysing data over the whole project portfolio.
