Errors using the Microsoft iSCSI Target VSS Hardware Provider and DPM 2012 SP1 Beta RRS feed

  • Frage

  • Hi,

I am testing DPM 2012 SP1 Beta and get the following errors logged in the Windows Application Event log. I am trying to backup virtual machines that are hosted on a Server 2012 Hyper-V cluster (RTM). The CSV is presented from a Windows Server 2012 iSCSI target server and I am trying to use the Microsoft iSCSI Target VSS Hardware Provider. The symptoms that I experience is that the backup jobs starts but never finishes and does not transfer any data to the DPM server.

I have checked VSSADMIN LIST PROVIDERS and VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS and both have no errors, I have checked the NIC binding orders as well as disabled TCP chimney and RSS on both the DPM server and Hyper-V hosts:

  • The problem with that is that your still not using the hardware VSS provider. I have just found a new blog post describing how to configure the iSCSI VSS Provider for Server 2012... looks like it needs credentials to fix the error I have been getting:

  • Good news, I have just tested the credential settings and this works :) !!! DPM is now using the Microsoft iSCSi Hardware provider without any errors!!!

Volume Shadow Copy Service information: A database of hardware snapshots was created.

  • Do you run your backup app with admin rights?

  • The DPM service runs under the local system account.

  • I had the same issue, but finally figured it out.

    Simply remove the following roles:

    File Server VSS Agent Service
iSCSI Target Storage Provider (VDS and VSS hardware providers)

Reboot.  DPM 2012 SP1 beta will then work using the new "Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider".  This does not appear to require any of the CSV steps required with 2010 or 2012 CSVs (aka, the DataSourceGroups.xml).

I literally just got my first Clustered Hyper-V VM to backup, so I can't let you know if there are any other issues, but 1 is better than none at this point!  I am doing this now to all other nodes in my 4 node cluster to fully verify it.
