More cpu for the "Virtual Server" service

Frage
-
Hi Forum,
I have a lapotp (Windows XP SP3) that I use for demonstration purposes. I have Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP2 installed. My question is how can I assign more cpu to the virtual server service? By default it seems to get only 50% which makes my virtual machine too slow. I would like to have 70-80% as nothing else is running on that machine.
All settings within Virtual Server configuration just affect the virtual machine.
TIA
Alex

Hi Alex,
I suppose that your laptop contains a dual core CPU? In that case you wont get a chance to utilize more than 100% of one core (logical processor). Each virtual machine can use up to 100% of a single logical host processor. That's exactly 50% of your CPU and that's the VMs limit. Sorry!
Cheers!

Hello Alex,
on this Technet site you can find informations how to optimize the performance of virtuial machines: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/kb00903748.aspx.
You should also take a look at the Virtual Server 2005 reviewers guide (http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/3/4/9349f3a2-2889-4ba5-8e85-6182473c257e/VSR2_revguide.doc). It is a word document with a deeper the documentation of the virtual server 2005. On page 25 is a description of the possible cpu allocation in virtual machines. It should be possible to allocate 100% of one physical cpu if you have installed multiple processors in your host system.
Which kind of server hardware do you use? Have you enabled hyper threading technology for your processors?
Kind regards,
Oliver- Als Antwort markiert Andrei TalmaciuModerator Dienstag, 6. Oktober 2009 06:42
