No audio devices in mixer after Vista x64 SP2 installation - devices in device manger just fine RRS feed

  • Frage

  • I have Vista x64 Ultimate. After installing the service pack 2 the mixer keeps telling me that there are no audio devices. Neither for recording nor for playback. Checking the device manager however all devices are there, working without problems.

I tried updating the drivers. It says I have the newest drivers.

Before the update everything was fine. On my emegency-partition (just OS for recovery in case I need that) SP2 is not yet installed. Sound works just fine there.

  • Hello Andrei,

I was stupid and pulled the wrong plug. Instead of disconnecting my USB headset I disconnected my TomTom cradle. Thus when rebooting the USB headset was still present. Uninstalling the drivers, pulling the plug on the USB headset and my LifeCam and rebooting thereafter now DID help. The system found the high definition audio and Pinnacle PCTV card after the reboot and the mixer got populated with the High definition Audio Device. I did another reboot and gradually added my USB headset and the Microsoft LifeCam agan.

Now I'm back to normal. The knowledge base article DOES help. I just pulled the wrong plug when trying yesterday :-(

Thanks again for pointing out this solution. For me it meant:
    + uninstall all audio devices
+ unplug all USB audio devices (in my case headset+camera)
+ reboot and wait for auto install of built-in sound
+ reboot and reconnect one by one the USB audio devices

    Best Regards

  • Hello Andrei,

thank you for the hint towards the knowledgebase. I have tried all manual steps and after that did not help also the fix-it-program. Unfortunately nothing helped. The fix it program when run told me "no audio hardware found" but while it ran I could hear a short noise in my loudspeakers that was quite similar to the one you get when you unplug/replug them.

Strange enough still all my drivers are installed, the newest and working without conflicts and all audio hardware seems to be fine when I start my emergency boot partition (the one without sp2).

In my device manager it says the following about audio- video- and game-controllers:
    + High Definition Audio Device
    + Logitech USB Headset
    + Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000
    + Pinnacle PCTV 3010iX Dual Analog + DVB-T
Quite enough to produce some sound somewhere.

I believe what would really help me is if I knew where in the registry the connection is being made between the available audio devices and the things that are being shown in the mixer. Do you have a hint for me where that key / those keys might be? That would give me the possibility to compare the registry after SP2 on my active partition with the registry before SP2 on my emergency boot partition.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Best Regards
