SBS 2011 Updates RRS feed

  • Question

  • We support a number of Servers running SBS 2011.

At one site, there have not been any updates for months. Windows updates on that Server reports that all updates are up to date.

In the other SBS Servers at other sites we have been receiving regular updates.

Can please anyone help on what might be the issue.

    Regards, Guido

  • Yes that's the one. In which case since you're successfully getting updates offered direct via Windows Update the issue must be with your WSUS installation. Check whether WSUS is even running locally (eg is the service running) and if it is then check within the WSUS UI and see if it's successfully synchronising the latest updates.

Are the client machines also getting their updates from that WSUS installation? If so are they receiving updates successfully or do they have the same issues as the server? That might help point you towards whether the issue with WSUS running at all / synchronising at all, or if it's something specific with the configuration on there.

If WSUS appears to be working you could also try checking c:\windows\windowsupdate.log to see if there are any errors showing up, perhaps indicating if somehow the server is unable to connect the local copy of WSUS.

  • Is the server perhaps receiving its updates from itself via WSUS? In which case the issue may be with the WSUS configuration on the server either not working, or not getting the required updates for the server.

If that is the case you should find when running Windows Update on the server that once it has completed searching for updates that you get a option to search for updates direct from Microsoft instead. In which case try choosing that option and see if you get offered the outstanding updates or if it continues to say there are none available. That should at least allow you to confirm whether the issue is with Windows Update or with WSUS on the server.

  • Keith,

    Thank you for your reply.

Windows Update has finished searching for updates and it reports no new updates.

The option that is available is "Check online for updates from Windows Update".

Is that the one you are referring to.

When we run this option it comes up with a number of updates available to download and install.

  • Hi Keith,

WSUS is running. How do we check if synchronisation is running.
