Shortcut Icon Not Applied

    Question

  • We have over 20 shortcuts for various business applications and websites configured in Group Policy. All Shortcuts are in the same GPO and all work without issue AFAIK. We use Item Level Targeting in order to deliver the correct icons to the correct Security Groups and OUs. Forest and Domain Functional Level are both 2003.

The other day, I received a request to deploy a new desktop shortcut for an MS Access database to the desktop of a particular team. I built the Shortcut inside our Desktop Icons GPO, configured Item Level Targeting and performed testing. The Shortcut is deployed and works as expected, except that the Icon is not applied! I placed the Icon in the same network share as the rest of the shortcut icons for our environment, but it never displays. Security is wide open on this icon file as well as parent folder.

Some of the things I have tried are:

    • Changed Action: create, replace and update
    • Switched "Run in logged-on user's security context" on and off
    • Tried both All Users Desktop as well as Individual Desktops
    • Changed Icon Index from 0 to 1 - there is only one icon in the target file.

I deleted the old icon and ran GPUPDATE /FORCE after each change yet I have been unable to apply an icon to this shortcut! Here is a screenshot of the shortcut, if you click the "Change Icon..." button, it even displays the correct location and icon file but it will not display!

Any tips or ideas for this frustrating issue will be greatly appreciated!

Answers

  • Hi,

Would you please try to copy the icon to the %userprofile% directory via a group policy, then the shortcut can be installed via GPO and the icon referenced as %userprofile%\icon-file-name.ico.

Please have a test and then let us know the result.

    Best Regards,

    Elaine
