How to Create Unatend.xml to Upgrade 2012 R2 to 2016 OS and how to determine if there is enough space available for the upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking for guidance on how to create an unattend file to automate the upgrade of 2012 R2 servers to 2016 OS.  The setup switches did not work as expected: setup /auto upgrade /quiet

The objective would be to not have to use the GUI: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/upgrade/upgrade-2012-to-2016

We will be upgrading from 2012 Standard (Desktop Experience) to 2016 Standard (Desktop Experience).  When I used the setup GUI for a test server I was not prompted for the product key so I assume we have Volume Licensing.

Would also like to know how to determine if there is sufficient space on the C drive to perform the upgrades.

  • No answer file needed.  Need to run: 'setup /auto upgrade /compat ignorewarning /showoobe none' and then only get prompted for the OS version

To determine if the C drive has enough free space run: 'Setup /auto upgrade /Compat ScanOnly'

Review the setupact.log in the hidden folder C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther.  Review error code in ImageExit referencing https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/upgrade/upgrade-error-codes
