Inplace upgrade questions RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Experts,

We have Lync 2013 environment with 3 Lync sites of 45000 users and wanted to inplace upgrade to Skype for Business 2015.

Could you please address the below questions?

    1. SfB Topology Publishing:
    •            How long does the Publishing process of the upgraded SfB topology take (4 EE pools with about 45k users and about 30 SBAs/SBSs)?
    •            What can go wrong?

    2.           Rollback of topology upgrade:
    •            What are rollback options when something goes wrong during topology upgrade publishing or upgrading of pools?
    •            What do we have to prepare in advance for a possible rollback?
    •            What are the steps for a rollback?
    •            How long does a roll back take?

    3.           Is inplace upgrade the recommended approach for large Lync 2013 pools with 25k+ users?

    4.           Is Sql Express 2012 Update to SP1 required or the latest SP for SQL Server Express 2012?

    5.           Before a topology upgrade to SfB, is it necessary to have the whole environment patched with Skype for Business prerequisites or only the pool that is going to be upgraded first?

    6.           We are using Sefautil. Is there anything we have to keep in mind when upgrading to Skype for Business?

    7.           Our Lync 2013 pools use a single monitoring database. When upgrading a pool to SfB, by default, also the monitoring database is updated.
Are there any issues with Lync 2013 pools and SfB pools using the same monitoring database? Do we have to setup a different monitoring database for the new SfB pools?

    8.           What about SBAs and pool upgrades? Do SBAs have to be removed from topology when the backup registrar of the SBA users (central pool) is upgraded to SfB? How is the backup registrar relation preserved?

    Many thanks for your help.

  • Hi SBHV,

You could refer to the following link to in-place update Lync server 2013 to Skype for business 2015 by the following link, update all Lync server 2013 roles to the latest before you perform in-place upgrade, also include SQL server. The time of the publishing topology will be depend on network connection between FE and CMS server.

    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn951371.aspx

We do not rollback Skype for business server 2015 to Lync server 2013 directly. Install a new Lync server 2013 pool and migrate user to this new pool. In my option, you could choose in-place upgrade to upgrade Lync server 2013 to Skype for business server 2015: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/30979.in-place-upgrade-lync-server-2013-to-skype-for-business-server-2015.aspx

You could create a separate monitor database for SFB server 2015, SBA should not be removed when you upgrade.

    Hi SBHV,

After you in-place upgrade Lync server 2013 to Skype for business server 2015, you need to re-configure Sefautil, because Skype for business server 2015 use UCMA 5.0, Lync server use UCMA 4.0:

For SQL Server Express 2012, update it to the latest before we do a in-place upgrade.

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you very much for your response.

I've one final question which is about the 7the question:

Our Lync 2013 pools use a single monitoring database. When upgrading a pool to SfB, by default, also the monitoring database is updated.

Are there any issues with Lync 2013 pools and SfB pools using the same monitoring database? Do we have to setup a different monitoring database for the new SfB pools?

According to this article (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/dn951371.aspx) we can go with either of the below options:

1.Upgrade an isolated Front End pool and associated Archiving and Monitoring stores - In this step, the Archiving and Monitoring store will be upgraded as well.
2.Upgrade Front End pool without upgrading Archiving and Monitoring stores - In this step, archiving and monitoring for the selected pool are disabled. The pool will not have Archiving and Monitoring stores after the upgrade.
3.Upgrade Front End pool and associated it to new Skype for Business Server 2015 Archiving and Monitoring stores - In this step, archiving and monitoring will stop in the previous store and start in the new store you've created.

    Question:

We have 3 sites and our SITE1 pools and the pools in SITE2 and SITE3 are using the same Monitoring database.
If we upgrade the SITE3 pool to SfB, together with the Monitoring database that is associated to this and the other pools, can you tell if the SITE1 and SITE2 pools, that will still be on Lync 2013 at that time, will still be able to work with the upgraded Monitoring database?

Or is the only way to go forward, create a new Monitoring database instance for the upgraded SfB pools and let the Lync 2013 pools continue to use the old Lync 2013 Monitoring database until they are also upgraded to SfB (your option 3)?

    Please help. Many thanks again.

  • HI SBHV,

You can still use the current monitoring database or create a new one fro using after migration to SFB.

  • Hi SBHV,

I agree with Holger, also from the link which you are posting, there are three scenarios, which are supported in in-place upgrade from Lync server 2013 to Skype for business server 2015.
