Upgrading Win2012 HyperV Cluster to Win2012 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a three node Windows 2012 Hyper V Cluster that uses CSV over a HBA. All VM's stored on the CSV [in all 15 VM's] are equally spread across the 3 hyperV host & failover from one host to another succesfully. The VM's are used to build a Win2012 RDS environment.

One obstecal we are facing is that we are not able to build a Guest Cluster using 2 VM's. We cannot get both the VM's to be able to access our FC LUN using SAN SW Manager & FC adapter configuration. Therefore we decided that we use the Shared VHDX feature that is available in Win2012R2 to build the 2 Node VM Guest Cluster.

Now the challange is that we will require to upgrade our existing 3 node win2012 hyper V Cluster to windows 2012 R2.

Can anyone share how we go about doing this?

  • Utilization of virtual Fibre Channel for use by virtual machines requires that the vendor of your HBA provide a driver that supports NPIV.  Check with your HBA vendor to see if they support this for use with Hyper-V.  Not all cards support it.

Here is an article that describes how to move a cluster to 2012 - the same process can be used to move to 2012 R2.  http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/25/10323434.aspx

  • Dear Tim,

We are NOT looking at migrating VM's from 2012 hyperv cluster to a new 2012R2 hyperV cluster, simply because we do not have extra hardware to setup a new 2012R2 hyperv cluster.

We are simply wanting to upgrade the Win2012 OS on our existing HyperV Cluster Parent partition to Win 2012R2 so that we can utilize the shared VHDX feature in 2012R2 hyperV.

And for the NPIV support, our hardware supports it but the FC LUN's simply refuse to connect to the Guest VM's. We had tried every thing from FC switch configuration, zoning etc but nothing helped. That is why we now decided to use shared vhdx.
