How do I Restore a Business Contacts Manager (BCM) database from SQL .mdf and .ldf files in Windows 10 Pro, Office 2010 Professional Plus? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Background:

Late August 2019: Windows Update 1903 wouldn’t install.

Windows Level1 support agent did remote session, deleted some files, unsuccessful.

Referred Service Request #: 1481355501 to level 2 support.

After first Level1 session, Windows would not start at all.

Level 2 support called, unable to resurrect Windows. Referred me to the local Microsoft store.

Visited Microsoft store several times, unable to resurrect Windows. Store staff said only solution was to wipe hard drives and do clean install of Win 10. Said I could recover files from my backup. I do full backup using "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)" in Win10 Control Panel including system image.

After Windows 10 clean install, restored files but unable to restore BCM database. Found .LDF and .MDF files in backup, which I understand are main data files for BCM. Store staff unfamiliar with BCM.

Do not have a specific BCM backup, had been relying on full laptop backup, unaware separate BCM backup required.

Microsoft Store personnel promised to research and revert, but never called back. Checked with them twice, each time they said they would research and revert but never did.

Called Windows support again and after telling the story half dozen times, referred to an "Office" support agent. SRX1482712457ID case opened. Several calls with Office Support including (remote access sessions) with no results. Agent admits not familiar with BCM databases. Eventually gave up and referred me to Communities, back to the Microsoft Store or start over with Microsoft help. Microsoft support (Commercial) now referring me to OAS. Indicate OAS agent would refund fee when provided history and case numbers.

Need to restore “Accounts” in BCM from my .LDF and .MDF files or any other files that would have been captured in “Windows Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” in Windows 10 Control Panel backup.

I am not a computer professional and advice needs to be appropriate for a non-expert to implement

  • Hi SYF,

Welcome to our forum, here we mainly focus on general issues about Outlook desktop client, so maybe I can't give a perfectly fit answer to you.

According to my research, there is an article may be helpful to you (this method also applies to Win10):

Backup and Restore Outlook Business Contact Manager.

(Please Note: Since the web site is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information.)

    Hope this can be helpful.
