DPM 2011 and disk access outside of DPM RRS feed

  • Question

  • Are we required to use RAW disks.  I mean can DPM use disks that are formated I would like to have access to the backups outside of DPM.

I would like to go to x:\storagegroup\c:\mydoc.docx and open the file directly.

  • Hi,

If you use custom disks (not recommended) or just put raw disks in the storage pool and let dpm make the volumes (recommmended), you can always get to the backup data because dpm keeps data in it's native format.  The easiest way to gain direct access to the backup (replica) volume is to simply run dpmbackup -replica - then navigate to the c:\program files\microsoft dpm\dpm\volumes\shadowcopy folder.  That will contain a read only shadow copy of the data on the replica at the time you ran dpmbackup.  The shadow copy will be deleted as part of the normal pruning process based on your retention period.
