Exchange RC to final supported? And Schema Updates? And co-exisit with 07? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello

Sorry if this has been answered before but I am just wanting to confirm the following things before deciding how to test the RC version of Exchange 2010. All I could find was info on going from the beta to the RC.

Firstly could the schema updates for the RC version cause any problems later on with the domain? Will I be able to update the schema from RC to final once the final is released?

Can I install the RC with Exchange 2007 to co-exist and will the RC support co-existance with the 2010 final in order to be able to move users between servers (i.e. off the pre-release one)

Also can I install it on Server 2008 R2 RTM?

The answers to these questions will depend on whether I use my main test domain for this or set up a new temporary one.

    Thanks
    Robin

  • Hi Robin,

    1. The schema (both store and AD) are totally locked in the Release Candidate, therefore, you are looking at the final schemas. Additionally, Exchange 2007 SP2, which releases tomorrow will also contain the same AD schema extensions as Exchange 2010.

    2. Yes, the Exchange 2010 RC will co-exist with Exchange 2007 SP2 servers (again, SP2 will release tomorrow). When we release the final RTM version of Exchange 2010, you'll be able to co-exist with the RC as well, but I'll be sending out advice on upgrade ordering to minimize issues. In general, the RC to RTM upgrade will looks like this: upgrade all CAS, upgrade all Hub, upgrade UM, upgrade all Mailbox servers/DAGs, then finish up with Edge servers.

    3. Yup, you can install the Exchange 2010 RC on both Windows Server 2008 SP2, and Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM

    Good luck with your install!

  • Yes you can upgrade the schema with Exchange 2010 RTM when the RTM version is available, but actually there won't really be any changes in regards to the Exchange 2010 schema classes and attributes. You can also upgrade AD and domain(s) with RTM versions of /PrepareAD and PrepareDomain.

You can co-exist with Exchange 2007 SP2 servers yes. Expect Exchange 2007 SP2 to be relased in a near future.

    You can install Exchange 2010 RC/RTM on Windows 2008 SP2 and Windows 2008 R2.

So you're good to go when Exchange 2007 SP2 is released.

  • Thanks to both of you for your replies and advice!

I will probably hang on and upgrade to SP2 first (I didn't realise it was coming so soon!)

Then once I confirm the SP2 update is working ok I will start the move to 2010 RC.

Will let you know how the upgrading goes!

    Thanks
    Robin

  • I downloaded and installed Exchange 2007 SP2 in my test environment. Now when I want to install Exchange 2010 RC in coexistance with Exchange 2007, I receive this error:

....Active Directory operation failed on dc.domain.com. The object "CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=aa,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com' already exists.

    Thank you

  • What exactly are you doing when you receive that error? It looks like you're doing a /preparead and it is just warning you that something was already done, not error'ing out.

  • I'm just trying to install it on a new installed machine with Windows 2008 SP2. It passes all readiness checks, and then during Organization Preparation phase, it fails with the error I've shown.

    Thank you

  • Thanks everyone for the info.

As others have stated it is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2. I am building a Hyper-V image to transfer to temporarily to migrate to SP2 and then I'll wipe the main machine (Hyper-V is on another!) and possibly install the 2010RC once I confirm that everything is still running ok.

Just out of interest I tried it on Windows Server 2008 R2 and it says it is blocked due to compatibility issues and if you try and run it in compatibility mode it tells you that a reboot is required before it will be able to install, but it says this every time you run it and restart. This was a way to get SP1 to install (I know it wasn't a supported scenario though).

Thanks to the team for the improvements in Exchange 2007 in terms of backup and the other enhancements as well as the work that is going into the 2010 release which is looking really good.

    Robin
