Power BI Desktop application RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is Power BI Desktop application a cloud base product? We currently have a policy that none of our company data can touch the cloud. We have a few employees who would like to use this software for analytics.

  • Power BI Desktop can be used standalone just like Excel. Your data does not have to touch the cloud if you don't want it to.

  • I am interested in using Power BI desktop but cannot have it touch the cloud.

When installing the product, how can disable this feature so it does not touch the cloud as we need all data local because company policy is no work data is to touch the cloud at this time.

Also is this software used in excel as an add-in?

    Hi Bubba,

As mentioned by Rich, Power BI Desktop itself isn't a cloud product; you install it locally and can choose not to use any of the cloud services (i.e. PowerBI.com). Currently, there are no in-built mechanisms to disbale the features that can publish to the PowerBI.com service. You'll need to block the urls that the publishing feature accesses if you want to prevent this from being used. In most cases, it's sufficient to inform employees that the use of the publishing feature is prohibited.

Something to also be aware of is that if you decide to add any custom visuals, from https://app.powerbi.com/visuals/ for example, you'll need to review the privacy statement for each one carefully to ensure that your data won't be implicitly uploaded to any 3rd parties.

Lastly, Power BI Desktop isn't an addin for Excel; it's a standalone application. That said, you can import data from Excel workbooks into Power BI Desktop.
