  • Hello,

    This is a tricky question.

1.) DPM should be running on a dedicated server and performing no other network service.

    HOWEVER

2.) As it's DPM 2010, it will already have SQL 2008 installed, if you wish to also run other instances of SQL on this same server for your users, then the best practice is to have DPM on a dedicated server.

3.) If you wish to perform an ILR from VHD's that the DPM server is backing up, then yes you can most definitely install the HyperV role on the DPM server as this is required.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff634221.aspx -- You must have the Hyper-V role enabled on the DPM server to perform item-level recoveries. During item-level recovery, DPM has to mount the VHDs of the protected virtual machines.

Can you install other roles as well as other instances of SQL? Yes, you can.  You may however run into resource issues, failed backup jobs, replica latency etc.....

    Thanks
    Shane

I have a HyperV DPM server running (for testing purposes). Without any problems.
