ADMX file question

    Question

  • In my environment we do not have a central store configured for ADMX files yet.  I do see that if I add an ADMX file to the local %systemroot%\PolicyDefinitions\, Group Policy editor sees the templates.  If I were to enable some of the settings from the ADMX template, would they apply to machines that receive the policy or would they be ignored because they are not on the central Sysvol store?  I realize that this is bad practice, but was curious for testing.

The settings are not stored in the ADMX (the ADMX is just a definition
for the UI you are looking at in gpedit) - they are stored in a file on
the sysvol share (registry.pol). So availability of the ADMX will NOT
affect GPO processing in any matter.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your post.

The answer to your question is yes. If the central store is unavailable, Group Policy Object Editor will read from the local administrative workstation. Locations for ADMX files on domain controllers are shown in the following table.

  • But what if is a custom ADMX. For example the google chrome one. I copy it to the local folder, open gpmc and creat a gpo with those settings. I'd i deploy it to a machine that does not have it in the local policy folder and it is not on the sysvol folder will it just bypass those settings at that point?
