"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." Any Help? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Basically, i've tried a number of fixes and so far none have actually solved the problem.

    I am running Windows 7 Premium. 6GB RAM. 64-bit Operating System. Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz.

     any help?

  • Try Resetting the Windows Update:

    Go to Services.msc

    Stop the following services.

    1. Windows Update service

    2. Cryptographic Service

    3. Background Intelligent Service

    then Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder into as SoftwareDistribution.OLD

    Restart the PC.

    Check the Windows updates now.

Note: Stopped services will be started automatically after the reboot.

Mark as Answer if it's worked. Thanks. Balamurugan_Subramaniyan

  • Make sure that your system is Virus free.  My computer IS virus free.

Download, Install and Update the Malwarebytes. Click this link to download:
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Dont need to download, already have program. No virus found. Did MULTIPLE scans. No threat found.

Start scan quick scan. Remove all the infections and reboot the PC. Again launch the scan whether it is quick scan or full system scan.

Make sure that Windows Update service is running.

    Okay.

    Go to Services.msc

    Okay.

Find and right click Windows Update > Start

Again, unable to find. It is NOT present in the list. EVEN when running.

Right click the Windows Update > Refresh

    Unable.

If it is automatically getting stopped, try this link.

    Okay.

    Run this troubleshooter: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9666880

    Okay. Ran, nothing changed.

    Reset the Windows Update

    Okay.

The module "------.dll" failed to load.

Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary dependent .DLL files.

The specified module could not be found.

    muweb.dll     msxm.dll     wuweb.dll     sccbase.dll     wucltui.dll     wuaueng1.dll

    wuweb.dll     gpkcsp.dll   slbcsp.dll      initpki.dll        mshtml.dll

    OR

The module "-----.dll" was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServerwas not found

Make sure that "-----.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file, then try again.

    qmgr.dll

EDIT: After restarting computer, its able to check for updates but not install them.
