Official documentation on "root folder path" in Outlook? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello.  I've recently had some issues with the "root folder path" field in Outlook (2013) (i.e. Account Settings-->Email-->Change-->More Settings-->Advanced).  Can someone point me to official Microsoft documentation regarding this setting--I cannot seem to find any in the built-in help file, nor on the web.  I have several third party pieces of information, in addition to my own personal observations.  I'd prefer to first read the official documentation, then reconcile all other information based on that.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Me too didn't find any documentation about this field.

Basically, lots of IMAP server implementations work from the "Inbox" folder as a root folder. New folders can then indeed only be created directly under the Inbox folder which can interfere with Outlook’s internal folder structure. Outlook may not always recognize the correct folders when the IMAP mailbox is based on a “root structure”. So Outlook provides this option for users to set the root folder.

If you have any doubts about this option, feel free to post a question in the forum, we'll be happy to help you.

  • Thanks for the reply, and eventually I will indeed post specific questions about "root folder path" to this forum.  But I'll do create a separate post for such questions.  I'd like to reserve this post specifically for official Microsoft documentation regarding this field.  If there are no replies in a few days, then perhaps we can mark it as resolved with, "There is no official documentation."

    Thanks.

    IMAP Root Folder:

If your email service requires this, you can specify the path of the root mailbox on the server that contains all your mail folders.

Test this out using a Gmail\Outlook.com account over IMAP and see if the behavior is same or different.
