Project 2013 Preview – 3D Bars and Gantt option RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are using customized Gantt chart bar styles that use unfilled half bars as shown below in the Critical and non-critical tasks.

In Project 2010 we were able get around this issue by setting the 3D option.  Further in 2010 (SP1, Version 14.0.6112.5000) these bar styles print as black horizontal lines rather than red or blue when the 3D option is turned Off.

I noticed that the “Show bars and shapes in Gantt Chart view in 3-D” option is no longer present on the “Advanced” options tab.  Has this option been moved or removed?

I apologize for missing the fact that your question was about the Microsoft Project 2013 desktop application.  My answer was for the 2010 version of the software.  To answer your question, Microsoft removed the Show bars and shapes in Gantt views in 3-D option in the Display section of the Project Options dialog.  So it appears that option is no longer available.  Hope this helps.

Unless I am going blind, I can see the Show Bars and Shapes in Gantt Views in 3-D option in the Display section of the Advanced page in the Project Options dialog.  Are you saying you do not see this option there?  Let us know and we will try to help.

Thank you for responding, after your post I was thinking that perhaps I was the one who has gone blind and would certainly feel sheepish if that were the case:)  However,  I have the 32 Bit version of MSP 2013 that Jan has identified in his post (Thank You, Jan).

    Thank You

Not a problem and thank you for confirming that the option has been removed.  Certainly there has been a bit of a storied history with this option with regard to printing and PDF creation.  That leads me to my follow-on questions that either you or a Microsoft forum participant may be able to answer.  When I printed a Ghantt chart with MSP 2013 and symbols such as those shown in the screen shot only the triangles would print with no horizontal bars.

    Is this a known issue?

Is there a plan to resolve this prior to release of MSP 2013?

    Thank you

I cannot find any reference to your particular problem, but it sounds like a bug.  I would invite others to see if they can reproduce the problem and to report the results in this forum.  I do not work for Microsoft, however, so if what you report is a bug, I have no way of knowing if and when Microsoft would fix it.  Hope this helps.

  • Hi all,

I can reproduce it not only for half bars but for each bar shape. I logged it as a bug.

Thank you both for taking the time  to research and respond to this post.  From my perspective it is a matter of planning for this next release so any information and support here is more than helpful.  I will check back as MSP 2013 evolves!

    Best Regards.

  • I notice that the latest release of MS Project 2013 still has this bug.  i.e. that the borders of bars in the gantt charts are not printed (you can easily see this in the print-preview). This means that unless you use a solid fill, the bars are not clearly visible.  The bug was reported almost 9 months ago.  Any information from Microsoft as to when they intend to fix it would be useful.  This is certainly stopping me from replacing my Project 2007 with 2013.

    Thanks

  • We are investigating a fix for this issue. I'll update this thread when I know more.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Dale!

I`m using Project 2013, but the gantt bar still in 2D format as show in the picutre bellow. Do you know how to change it to 3D format, wich should be the default for this version of Project?

    Thanks!

  • Patricia --

The 3-D Gantt bar option was removed completely as an option in the Project Options dialog in Microsoft Project 2013.  So, the best I can tell you is that you will need to live with 2-D Gantt bars.  Hope this helps.

  • Hi Heather, Not sure if I'm responding in the proper location, but when I print to Adobe PDF printer or Save As PDF (MS Project 2013), the bars often, but not always, do not print properly. Only the arrows to the linked tasks show up for both critical and non-critical path tasks. Has this been resolved?

  • Here's how I fixed the problem.

    File-> Export-> Create PDF/XPS Document

    This worked perfectly for me.
