First time I've got a problem with opening project RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been using my MS Project 2010 during some years. Couple hours ago I've stumbled upon an issue when I tried to open my .mpp file. Firstly it denied to open, after I saw...An unexpected problem occurred while opening the file. I launched built-in function to recovery ms project data, but it didn't handle the issue. My file still can't be opened.

  • Have you tried creating a new project and inserting your problem file as a sub-project?

  • JosephaMur,

Rather than double click the file to get Project to open it have you tried to open Project itself and then try and open the file either from the recent list or by going File>Open?

I have had situations where this approach has allowed me to open files that would not open in Project by double clicking the file name.

    With good wishes,

Re-create a whole new file from the corrupted/bloated file or apply some helpful solutions in the following…

    1. Open a new blank project file  2. Go to Insert/Project and insert the problem file. 3. Select the first task which will be the insertion point summary line. 4. Go to Project/Task Information/Advanced tab. 5. Uncheck the "Link to Project" button and hit "OK". 6. If the file isn't already expanded, expand it. 7. Select all tasks below the top level summary line. 8. Outdent the selected tasks. 9. Delete the first task which previously was a summary line. 10. Save the resulting file.
