HP Thin Clients RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

Our organisation has been given a number of HP 5520 thin clients. 30 units but only 15 power units/cables for them. We are thinking of implementing some of them but I need to test them out first. This is completely new to me and I'm therefore asking for any direction or advice on what software to use (I think we would like a windows environment)? Searching around the internet I am guessing that would mean that I should ask for Windows Embedded System.

Is there a way to test if these units work before buying licenses for them?

When buying license for them, do you buy for each unit or do you buy only the server software?

    Thanks for any help!

    Sincerely,

    Magnus

  • Magnus,

I'm not completely clear on what you're wanting to do here.

Thin clients for the most part are used to connect to a Terminal Server (or now, Remote Desktop Services), or Citrix environment.

If you're wanting to put them in place, you would want to have a Remote Desktop Services Server put in place for the clients to connect to.

  • You should contact HP to find out what is going on.

Since these are Windows CE devices, you should to post to this forum: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsembeddedcompact

  • The HP thin clients should have come with an operating system on them already. Typically, this would be Windows Embedded Standard or Windows CE. For the t5520, Windows CE is the supported operating system. Check the link Jared sent you.

The licensing for the OS is already paid for with the current OS running on the units. All you need to do is connect them to your domain. A CAL will be needed for any back office application connections.

If you have specific questions on Windows CE, you can post them here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/windowsembeddedcompact

  • Hi again,

Have been able to get more time to check these thin clients again. I have started a few of them and always at first start up I come to a login box for which I have no idea what to write. I tried guest and administrator but not the general passwords worked. However when the next time I boot them up again I don't get the login screen, just a blank screen after the initial boot up screen. Maybe it is because it does not yet connecting to the server. I've used windows server 2003 to set up a terminal server for them to connect to.

Do they get blank screens because they can't connect to the server?
