Windows 8.1 x64 Disk cleanup "lags" to complete task RRS feed

  • Question

  • After doing a Windows 8.1 x64 (reset) of the OS, rebuilding desktop programs caused a problem. The "full" disk cleanup (lags) to complete the task of (2.05 GB's) of file cleanup, after (200) and more Windows Updates. (2) hours and longer is a long time to complete the operation.

Question: Is there a quicker method & solution to cleanup (2 GB's) loads of files, after a PC reset to re-install (200) Windows Updates?

Note: The first phase of disk cleanup is all my machine can do proficiently, with a (i5 CPU) hard drive.

  • Hi lee Vernon,

I fully understand the inconvenience you have encountered. It always needs long time to clean up after install updates. Because the WinSxS folder can be quite large. It’s a normal action, don’t worry.

You could try to use the command below:

    Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

Hope it will be helpful to you
