Hard Drives turn off and on every 2 minutes!! RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a backup drive RAID array that keeps turning on and off every 2 or so minutes. At that rate the hard drives will fail within 139 days as they are rated for 100,000 read/write arm parks which is quite generous as they are WD SATA Raptor disks. 720 start/stops a 24 hour day for 139 days will cause them to excede the manufacturers life expectancy though. This happens even when Vista is instructed to Never power off hard disks in the power settings is there any day to fix this before my $300 disk array fails? Now I can prevent this by continously using the disks by playing an MP3 but this is not practical for medium size office users. If something is not done, Vista installed computers around the would could possibly die within the first quarter that vista is out!!!
