How do you remove a server from the SharePoint 2010 Farm which includes Project Server 2010?

    Question

  • I have inherited a SharePoint 2010 Enterprise farm with 11 servers total (don’t ask why cause I’m working on brining that number down J ). Included in the farm is Project Server 2010. I know once Project Server 2010 is installed you can’t remove it from the farm (see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662109.aspx), but I’m not trying to remove Project server 100%, rather just remove a single server from the farm.

To remove this server do I just follow the steps of?

    1. Turn off the services from Central Admin on that server
    2. Uninstall SharePoint using the “Programs and Features” from the control panel on the server
    3. Uninstall Project Server using the “Programs and Features” from the control panel on the server

    Thank you in advance, Peter

  • Swap 2 and 3, then you've got your order right.  Remove Project Server, then SharePoint Server.  Or just turn the server off and use Central Administration -> Manage Servers -> remove server.  This leaves that server in an unusable state (SharePoint-wise), so you'll likely want to format it prior to reusing it.

  • I finally got the time to test this out and it worked perfectly, thanks!

To remove the server I did the following steps as suggested by Trevor Seward.

      • Turn off the services from Central Admin on that server
      • Uninstall Project Server using the “Programs and Features” from the control panel on the server
      • Uninstall SharePoint using the “Programs and Features” from the control panel on the server

My other servers are still running both SharePoint and Project server 2010, so I didn’t run into any issue as described by others. All my web applications and PWAs are running without a problem.

    Thank you in advance, Peter
