SharePoint 2013 On Prem - MS Project Online Integration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

We have SharePoint 2013 on prem. We are planning to integrate it with MS Project Online. Question.

    1. Is this a viable option?

    2. What are the pitfalls/challenges we should be aware of?

    3. How will authentication for MS Project online work?

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    AJ

  • Hello,

What part of SharePoint Server 2013 on-prem do you want to integrate with Project Online? Some of the SharePoint stuff will integrate like search and BCS etc. in hybrid mode but that is probably it really for "out of the box" integration.

  • Hi AJ,

For those requirements it would be easier for the two features to co-exist in the same farm. If you are planning to keep SharePoint 2013 on -prem you are probably better to go with Project Server 2013 or look to move everything to Office 365 (SharePoint and Project Online).

If the two co-existed you could do what you needed, for example the user could create a project in MS Project and save this to a SharePoint task list on a site in the PWA site collection or even create the tasks directly on a SharePoint site task list on a site in the PWA site collection. When the project needed to become a fully fledged project the SharePoint site with the task list could then be added to PWA.

  • Hi Paul,

So we wanted to do in it's entirely so users can start creating project in SharePoint and launch it full fledged in MS Project when the project takes off (In addition to items you have listed above). Also we were looking for having SharePoint as a central repository for documents associated with projects and user authentication in MS Project. SO you are saying it is not possible in the out of the box setup? Question:

    1. What amount of customization would it require if we were to go On prem SharePoint & MS Project in online environment?

    2. Would on prem MS Project be easier to setup with SharePoint and user authentication?

    thanks for your feedback.

  • In addition to that - it might be worth you working with a Microsoft PPM partner so that you get the best solution for your requirements as we cant really go into enough detail here.
